Description
While there are approximately half a mile of cliffs spread around Green island poor rock quality has kept all but three basalt spires on the east side of the island from being climbed. The climbing is definitely not worth an independent trip to Green Island, but if you are already there and want to get some climbing in, this area makes for a fun side trip. As of June 2017 access was not restricted in any way. The two spires on the beach are between 40 and 60 ft and can be top-roped by walking up the back side and setting trad anchors. While some harder routes look possible the natural lines yield 5.6-5.8 cruxes. The last spire is 120' high; reachable at high tide with 10 yards of swimming and at low tide with a bold leap. It is not possible to hike up the final spire. The easiest route to the top is 5.3
Getting There
After getting to Green Island you'll need to get some form of transportation. Most of the island uses electric scooters; a single charge on a 50cc scooter will get you all the way around the island. It was easy to rent both scooters and cars while departing the ferry in June 2017. Drive to the "Little Great Wall" tourist attraction and go south. Turn left to go east on first side road you reach and follow it down to a garbage dump. Leave the scooter at the end of the road and go down to water level. Hike north, easier at low tide, and around the point to the small beach that is visible from the Little Great Wall. The four ocean spires at the north end of the beach all have high enough rock quality to climb. According to Ron's Blog it is also possible to follow a trail from the primary road down to the beach.
