Description
Savage River is the furthest into Denali one can freely drive during a typical summer season. Parking on the near side of the river puts you within a couple hundred yards of the obvious tor-like formation, around which development is currently centered. Taking the main trail up towards the tor takes you right through the main boulders, but scouting the trails and hillsides of the surrounding area will likely yield much more.
A note: Our ability to climb in the park depends on remaining on good terms with the parks service. I have been asked to leave due to the presence of bears, and have heard of seasonal closures due to raptor nesting. Please cooperate with the Parks Service and be respectful in general. Use minimal chalk, clean up after yourself, respect the wildlife.
Additionally, I know that bouldering has occurred here in the past. If you have any knowledge of that history, please pass it on!
