(e) Big Snag Wall

Washington > Northwest Region > San Juan, Fidal… > Mt Erie > (c) Orange Area

Description

Not to be confused with Snag Buttress on the Main Wall, Big Snag Wall is tucked among the firs on the lower SW part of the Mountain. Big Snag has three fine moderates and a tougher face packed into a 40’ wide section of the wall. You could probably top rope any of these routes by rapping down from the Orange Wall Trail to the anchors.

Climbs face SW but the lower part is well shaded by large trees. The ground is getting trampled and starting to erode, so please limit your impact.

Getting There

Reaching Big Snag is not terribly difficult but definitely not simple. From the lower trailhead, hike to Black Wall, then continue left and up the obvious trail several hundred more yards. Or, from the upper mountain, descend the Skyline Trail a fair ways then turn left on a side trail shortly after the junction to Orange Wall. The turnoff is in a grove of large cedars where the soil is often squishy, from which the access trail drops steadily to the wall. The length (~20 minutes) and difficulty of both approaches is about the same – would you rather grunt before or after climbing? These descriptions will likely be insufficient your first time, so go with a local or have the guidebook in hand – Rockin’ on the Rock by Kloke and Thompson

[Hide Comment] There's a newer looking bolt line to climber's left of outer space. Shares anchors, and has nice crimping and edging. Likely 5.8/9, but I didn't lead it so it's just a guess. May 13, 2022
