Description
Kazbegi is an administrative region in the Caucasus mountains bordering Russia. The main town is Stepantsminda (სტეფანწმინდა). It was also previously known as Kazbegi (ყაზბეგი) and still may be at times, particularly in foreign literature which can lead to confusion. It is often best known for the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, which attracts many visitors and is prominently featured in Georgian tourist information.
Stepantsminda is the main hub for mountaineering and climbing in the region, particularly for those headed to Mt. Kazbek and Kazbegi National Park. There is no shortage of rock, alpine and mountaineering routes in the area but sadly little English language information.
