We have been granted permission to develop the area but land ownership is often contested in the area. Be careful and make sure to keep help maintain a good relationship with the locals. In particular, when climbing at Chittipara, make sure to inform the temple caretaker that you are visiting.
Description
Chittipara is a solid granite peak that pokes out of the landscape at the very foothills of the western ghats. It stands out like a sore thumb in the surrounding heavily vegetated landscape. It is located on the way to the touristy Ponmudi when traveling from Trivandrum. Beyond locals, the rock is not frequently visited. The North face of the rock is shaded throughout the day and receives a great deal (making communication during the longer climbs difficult). However, the wind makes this side a great place to escape the heat of Kerala's muggy summers. The south side has better beginner routes, but once you climb above the tree line, the full force of the sun beats down on you. You will be left all alone when traveling to the south face. At the north face or when topping out you will encounter some infrequent locals.
All routes were bolted in 2016 and offer great views. The climbs on the south face are fairly short and of much easier grades while the western face offers the longest routes. The North wall has some fairly challenging and unenjoyable TR routes.
If you are visiting Trivandrum or would like to climb in south Kerala, please contact the Kerala Climbers facebook page to get the local club involved.
