Description
Spread out climbing possibilities south and west of the gorgeous city of Dresden. Here is a thorough description of the differentiation between the Erzgebirge and the neighboring Elbsandsteingebirge, provided by Geology PhD candidate Ms. B. Sonntag:
"As the Elbsandsteingebirge consist completely of coarse- to fine-grained Cretaceous sandstone and some Tertiary volcanic rocks which intruded the sandstone and erupted on top of it, the Erzgebirge (also known as Ore Mountains) consists mainly of slates and gneisses, which were metamorphosed during the Variscan orogeny. Also in this time rocks became intruded by granitoids. This happend around 330 Ma ago whereby the Elbsandsteingebirge had their origin around 65 Ma ago. During the Tertiary a north-south-compression, which also is responsible for the Alpine orogeny, caused an uplift of the Ore mountains accompanied by a brittle deformation. Horst and Graben structures with bigger thrusts and faults are the results. Stress field became weaker to the northeast so the Elbsandsteingebirge didn't became attached that much but also shows structures caused by brittle deformation. Like in the Elbsandsteingebirge also in the Ore Mountains Tertiary volcanism occured and basaltic rocks had been formed."
