Description

One of Norway's most famous ice falls. It is nearly as wide as it is tall, and it has seven independent ice and mixed routes, all of them hard!

The fall faces northeast, so it can often be climbed into April. It is, however, prone to strong westerly breezes, which can build large cornices at the top, and copious spindrift. It also can result in deep snow on the slopes below, complicating the approach.

Getting There

As you near Hemsedal on RV7 from Gol, Hydnefossen will be visible west of the road from several kilometers away. As you near Hydnefossen, turn left on a service road, that immediately crosses a bridge. Continue on the road, and park when you are directly below. If you are lucky, someone put the approach track in for you. Otherwise, head out through the pines, cross the drainage, and hike up through trees to the base. Anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours, depending on snow depth.
