Description
Climbing on limestone crags and big conglomerate faces. The main area has become quite popular, despite its distance from major population centers. Prime time is November - March.
While Kenting is known as a beach party scene, the whole Hengchun peninsula is chalk-full of various places to explore, stay, and eat good food. Public transportation isn't great though. You'll probably want to rent a scooter.
Climbing was established sometime in the early 90's by climbers unknown on limestone cliffs near the tourist attraction of Sail Rock. The last published information prior to recent development was on Ron's Climbing Page. The website was abandoned in 2009, and the information is even more out-of-date, but it is still interesting nonetheless.
In 2016, Nate Ball and Marcus Gambino, a visiting Aussie, put up a two-pitch sport climb on the iconic 大尖山 north face. It hasn't become popular and has a reputation for being scary.
In 2021, Sam Fang and other local climbers began developing the limestone near Sail Rock in earnest. It now contains 100+ routes of excellent quality and varying grades across seven adjacent walls.
Getting There
If taking public transportation from anywhere on the west coast, the fastest way would be to take HSR to Zuoying station in Kaohsiung (end of the line), get off, walk out of the station, and immediately catch a bus to Kenting. This should take 1.5-2 hours. Get off at Nanwan or Xiaowan, depending on what your plans are (where you're staying, how you're getting around). Check the area pages for information on how to get to each crag.
