The Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent's Compendium states that: 1. Vegetation is not allowed to be used as an anchor. 2. Only neutral or rock colored bolt hangers are allowed.
Main Gate Rock is actually comprised of two separate crags - the main one is lighter colored and west-facing while the other is smaller and south-facing with brown rock; both are visible from the road if one knows where to look.
Getting There
Park in one of several turnouts 0.4 to 0.6 miles from the Park entrance and walk east for 5-10 minutes to reach the crag.
