Description
Lookout Mountain has a small crag located just North of Virginia, Minnesota. The cliff(s) and boulders are accessed easily from the existing hiking trail system at the Laurentian Divide Rest Area located on the north lane of Highway 53. The climbing is secluded with a great view. Lookout has bouldering, short trad climbs, and small top rope climbing on high quality granite.
The tallest cliff at Lookout Mountain is about 30 ft. tall and hosts at least 6 top rope and/or trad climbs. There's an easy corner, moderate difficulty face climbs, as well as two right leaning cracks that take small gear. The bouldering at Lookout Mountain is often slab or overhanging; be prepared to clean lichen and moss from the rock as much of this area has never been climbed. Much of the bouldering is on "mini-cliffs" which are on the trail to the summit. Although, there are also free standing boulders located along the hiking trail; some of which include several miles of hiking. There are other hills along the Laurentian Divide such as Pike Mountain and Radio Tower Hill that have free standing boulders and probably more "mini-cliffs" with routes waiting to be developed. Lookout Mountain also includes an excellent hiking trail and 7.5 miles of outstanding hand built "old-school" mountain biking trails. Check out All Trails and Trailforks app for the hiking and mountain biking trails.
