Description Suggest change

The Dragon Eggs lie in the rock-strewn gullies and hillsides below the Red Dragon climbing area. The area also offers great views of the Devil's Chair and of Town. Here you will find a good mix of grades - making it quite accessible to a wide range of climbers. The dragon eggs are composed of primarily large free standing boulders - a nice change of pace for Flagstaff bouldering. One boulder not to be missed is the Smaug boulder, one of the best on Elden.

Like most of Mt. Elden, the rock type is Dacite, but climbs quite similarly to Granite. Rock quality varies but is very similar to the routes up at Red Dragon and is best on north facing walls and in the drainage's.

Getting There Suggest change

The quickest way to access The Dragon Eggs is by parking on the west end of The Trinity Heights Methodist Church Parking lot. Below i'll offer the quickest way I've hiked to these boulders, but the main point is hike up towards the Devil's Chair and look for boulders in prominent drainages, or the Red Dragon trail. Since logging operations have occurred, there are new logging roads and skid trails which make it easier to just pick one up and follow towards devil's chair.

From the parking lot, head north into the woods by a large trash can. Continue north on a good trail past two intersections towards the base of Elden until you reach a water tank.

At the water tank take a left (west) heading towards Gloria's. Continue on this trail for approximately 5 minutes until you reach an obvious trail heading north, towards the mountain. This trail is a Y-like intersection.

Continue North on this trail, you will see a large gully on the right hand side, but continue on the trail. After walking for approximately 10-15 minutes on this trail, head right on a good, but less distinct trail that bails off into the gully. Here you will find the first two boulders. Red Dragon trail continues past these two boulders and switch backs up towards the Red Dragon cliff.

For the main drainage, continue up the gully on a trail until you reach a Y in the gullies. Take a right into the gully past a large cairn to reach the first large boulder, The Dragon Egg. There are more boulders straight up this drainage including DragonForce and others. You can see the Smaug boulder from the Dragon Egg, and many other boulders past Smaug in the paralleling drainage to the East.
