East Pinnacle

International > Oceania > New Zealand > S Island > Canterbury > Mt Somers

Description

Long (30-37 m)sport climbs on what is commonly described as "interesting" andesitic ignimbrite. Hand and footholds consist of knobs poking out of the cliff face giving a gym-like climbing experience, however these knobs are prone to breakage. (translation: belayers bring a helmet) Also bring two ropes to rappel as the anchors are just a few meters further than 30 m from the ground. Climbs are north facing and get sun all day. Windy at the top.

Getting There

This is the furthest pinnacle from the hut. Follow the climbers' path behind the bathroom, past the Hut Pinnacle and down the scree slope below the West Pinnacle.
