Description Suggest change

Choke Cherry Dike is a volcanic basalt wall or dike. The formation rises out of the ground again on the east side of Salt Creek.

While the rock is volcanic, it is not columnar and has no crack systems. Climbing is on small pockets and edges. The sharp edges can be hard on the fingers - though no so bad that it should stop you from climbing here. The routes are fun and worthwhile.

All routes are bolted, and all of them are easily set up for towrope by scrambling up the back side of the formation.

Getting There Suggest change

Choke Cherry Dike located in Salt Creek Canyon on the side of the Nebo Loop road AKA paved Forset Service road 015.

From Nephi, take state highway 132 east toward Ephraim/Manti. Five miles from Nephi the Nebo Loop Road is on your left. Choke Cherry Dike is 1.8 miles up the Nebo Loop Road from the Hwy 132 intersection.

There is plenty of parking at the edge of the road next to the wall. To avoid trampling the meadow and kicking up late summer dust, park along the roadside in the gravel. Approach time is 8 seconds.

History and Development

Suggest change

Choke Cherry Dike was developed in 1994. Jason and Kristi Stevens drilled the routes while courting, and as members of a Snow College climbing class. Maple Canyon and other local canyons (Round Valley, Axe Handle, Log and New Canyon) were simultaneously developed. Choke Cherry Dike was ideal because it offered an early spring alternative to Maple Canyon, usually ridden with snow until mid-may. It was also easy to access, and if there were no lead-capable climbers in the group the entire wall could be set up for top rope by scrambling up the back side of the formation. It is also a small and compact area, so managing a group was simple and safe.

In 2012 Kristi and Jason returned to the wall to develop "Twig and Berries" and "Spider Pig" with their children.

This wall has been the site of some vandalism over the years, predominantly hangars and anchor stations that were continually pilfered and placed on other walls. In the spring of 2025 efforts were in place to replace all lead bolts and anchor stations with glue-ins to prevent future theft and restore missing  lead bolts.

Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a native North American shrub or small tree with showy and fragrant white flower clusters in spring. It produces dark red to purple-black berries.
