Airport Heights

Alaska > Anchorage & S C… > Valdez Area Rock

Description

Airport Heights is a beautiful single pitch sport wall near the Valdez Airport. The crag can be see a few hundred feet up the above the east end of the Runway and is the bottom right crag in a cluster of four cliffs. It offers spectacular views of the valley, ocean and surrounding mountains. All day sun and a moderate approach make this a great crag for after work or a leisurely weekend outing. This wall contains six routes on mostly good quality rock. Routes are between 20m and 25m long. Don’t forget the bug spray and a camera for some amazing sunsets.

Getting There

Drive past the Valdez Airport and turn left into Valdez Glacier Campground. Follow the main road through the campground to where it dead ends at the runway and park if driving a car. From here, follow the Old Jeep Trail (dirt Road) 1/4 mile till the first walking path cuts right and heads straight to the first large cliff. Follow the trail a few hundred feet up a steep approach to the wall on right. This same trail is used to access Raven Rock on left. Trail may be slippery when wet, and long pants are nice if it has not seen a lot of traffic to keep the trail packed down. Bears do a better job than people at this, so some bear spray is nice to keep in your chalk bag for any mid-climb battle royal :) The approach time is about 15 minutes.

P.S. Climbers have been on the good side of the camp hosts for many years, and we want to keep it that way. DRIVE SLOWLY IN THE CAMPGROUND, and DO NOT PARK IN CAMPSITES. Saying hi and offering a beer every now and then can't hurt good relations. :)

2019 approach trail is looking good, hope there will be a team to pass the baton off to some time soon.

[Hide Comment] This crag has become quite dirty. It wouldn't take a lot to clean, but definitely needs a scrubbing. May 28, 2022
