Tishomingo Climbing

Tishomingo State Park is located in northeastern Mississippi near its border with Alabama. It is heavily wooded and looking at it from the air you would never guess that there is climbable rock. However, that is one of the benefits of Tishomingo. The boulder fields and rock walls are located in a wooded area that provides shade from the summer southern Sun. Access to the climbing areas is by a maintained trail.

There is $2.00 access fee per climber. If you're a party of 2 or less, I would suggest paying with bills smaller than a $20.00 as they frequently don't have enough change for bills of that size first thing in the morning. A climbing permit is required. To get a permit you must fill out a permit and show the ranger your helmet. 

Currently, an updated guidebook is in development, the original climbing guide with 117 route descriptions is no longer available at the ranger's station. 

All climbs are single pitch trad or top rope and most are 15 to 35 feet high, although some go to 60 feet. Top ropes are difficult to rig because adequate anchors tend to be far from the rock edge. Be prepared to anchor 15 to 25 feet from the rock face. There are also several nice bouldering areas within the park.

Climbs are rated between 5.0 and 5.11. The most well known climb is Jean's Overhang, a 60 foot 5.11 fist crack through an 18 foot roof.

Campsites are available for longer trips and the park has two beautiful 1930's picnic shelters with large beautiful stone fireplaces. Both are excellent spots for a post climbing meal and hangout. 

Tishomingo offers a ton of historic Mississippi climbing routes as well as many development opportunities for new boulders and possibly even some new trad. If you're up for hiking and exploring, Tishomingo offers more possibilities each time you go out. 

The park also offers an extensive trail system that is linkable for a hike up to 16 or so miles along beautiful rock outcroppings and a surprising amount of elevation changes throughout the hike.
