Description
Santorini is the idyllic Greek island with the pretty white buildings you see on post cards. Most people show up here to lounge on the beaches (available in several colors), drink cocktails, and stay up all night bar crawling/clubbing. If you can sneak away in the mornings while the rest of your group is sleeping (and your head isn't ringing too badly) then you can find a good deal of climbable rock on the east side of the island. Best if there's at least one functional belayer you can drag along. You'll probably be here in the summer and it does get hot, so get an early start and don't forget some water! The sectors can be reached from the towns of Kamari or Perissa.
Getting There
Plane or ship from Athens. Popular tourist destination but don't expect to find many or any other climbers.
(1) There are five climbing sectors, not three. (2) Mountain Project’s map misdirected us. The easiest ways to access the area is to enter in your map program “Kościuł Prawosławny Na Górze, Thira 847 00, Greece”, which is a small chapel (a destination in its own right) immediately next to the climbing area. You can reach the area by walking on hiking trail 3, which can be accessed either from the base of the mountain and then walking up, or from the windy access road and then walk down. The trail is pretty steep, but it will only take you around 10 minutes from either access point to get to the climbing area. (3) We climbed in June. Sectors 1-3 are very sunny until mid-afternoon. The climbing surface of Sector 4 or 5 (I don’t recall) was already semi-shaded by 10:30am. (4). Lots of routes were set, bolts were good. (5). View of the sea is great from the climbing area. (6). We didn’t see any other climbers during the two days we were there in June, but we did see plenty of hikers passing by the climbing area.
