The Belafonte

California > Central Coast > Santa Barbara > Santa Barbara… > Brickyard > Jah Hole

Description

"Let me tell you about my boat."

Although the Belafonte was in bit of a state of disrepair, some cleaning has yielded a handful of fun problems. Further cleaning should yield innumerable problems of pretty much any grade one could ask for. From lower angle slabby climbs on the right side to tall scary test-pieces on the left, this boulder is likely to have it all.

While two original problems (Calm, Collected, German and the V1 traverse) on the left side are still as good as ever, recent work has cleaned up at least three fun slab climbs on the south side of this face and at least one stout crimpy problem near the traverse. Quite a few more may be available with some additional effort. The quality of the rock after cleaning is better than some might expect. Nonetheless, the problems are likely to evolve somewhat in the near future, and regular dusting is recommended. If you're motivated, bring a few brushes and a six pack (pack it back out with you of course) and go to town...I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Getting There

Take the trail that branches off left at the base of the Kiser Problem and follow it till you hit an unmistakably large boulder with a gash that runs diagonally up and left throughout most of the boulder.

[Hide Comment] It should be noted that without a doubt people have climbed this boulder before (Kelly can probably shed more light on this). My guess is that when the fires rolled through a few years ago the rock was probably heated and exfoliated rendering a lot of the problems loose and unrecognizable (I've found some old warped Sierra Nevada bottles out here to back this up). Therefore while the problems may seem new, they aren't necessarily. Happy climbing! Jul 17, 2013

[Hide Comment] The boulder was always a tad junky, although I do remember doing the dyno problem on the far left part of the boulder. Really good quality problem, although I do not recommend falling on the upper part. Perhaps V4R. Aug 2, 2013
[Hide Comment] Does anyone know more about the climbs on the left side or middle of this boulder. Today I did a climb that starts underneath the low roof on a jug left hand side pull and an undercling pocket right hand. You precede into some small half pad crimps to a nice flat jug near the top. It was really fun, a bit chossy on the top out, go check it out. I think it was around a V7/8 compared to the other climbs in the area. Nov 24, 2013

[Hide Comment] I know which line you're talking about. I always thought it would be cool bet never got around to it, if it's been done Kelly Lindsay would be the one to talk to. Good on ya for getting it done though. If this boulder ever got a serious cleaning there could definitely be some cool problems on the left side for sure. Check out the mini-guide I threw up on the Jah Hole main page if you're looking for some ideas for new problems out there...there's a bunch. Nov 25, 2013

[Hide Comment] According to Tony Becchio's comment, he, Kelly Lindsay, and Joel Brown spent lots of time on this rock in the early 2000s. By early 2020, there was virtually no sign of prior climbing, except on the biggest holds of the traverse and some on the lower part of Calm, Collected, German. The rest was total choss. The rock (and landing zones) has seen significant renovation and seemingly a small surge in activity starting around April-May 2020. Super fun place and a great early morning destination since it stays cool even in the middle of summer. Nov 17, 2020

[Hide Comment] Knowing that, maybe it's a bit premature to be claiming first ascents on the boulder. Nov 17, 2020
