Bucegi Mountains (Muntii Bucegi) Climbing

This mountain range features deep glaciated valleys which cut through a horseshoe shaped alpine plateau. This huge uplift extends from just east of the "Dracula's Castle" region at Bran, to the ski areas of the Prahova Valley. The rock is limestone and conglomerate. There is a 3000-5000+ ft vertical drop from valley floor to the highest peak Omul's summit. There are 1000+' cliffs in the glacial valleys and numerous interesting snow/ice routes. This range is an epicenter for Romanian alpinists since it is accessible by train stop in the Prahova Valley. The range is located next to a major Europe-Asia train route so it has been visited by many international tourists over they years, however visitor numbers are only a tiny fraction of that of Austria or areas west of Romania.

Ski Mountaineering:
Skiing, both resort based and backcountry are popular in the Bucegi. There are many glacial valleys both moderate and extreme which are frequented by some of Romania's best skiers.

Ice Climbing:
There is plenty of ice climbing in this range although more information is needed.

Rock Climbing:
This is the most accessible alpine climbing area in Romania and has a history of alpinism. Since before World War I soldiers based on the summits, guarded what was then a border with Hungary (Transylvania (ro), Ardeal(hung)). Communist Romania had troops train in alpinism in this range. Today alpin clubs across Romania take trips to this range to climb.
