Description
Cute little limestone area in southwestern Taiwan. As such, the prime time is winter, with summers being excruciatingly hot and miserably wet. It's up in the hills a little ways, nestled in the dense forest above a beautiful little rural community. Rock quality ranges from quality drippy tufas to sharp coral-esque pockets. The first wall you come to - the Ultimate Wall - is just that. All the other areas really don't compare; far shorter, more confined, lower quality rock. Long winter holidays can get really busy with Taipei climber crowds, though this may have lessened with the addition of the Kenting crag. Lead bolts and anchor hardware have seen a major upgrade to stainless steel, which is fantastic. Overall, a worthy destination, especially if you're interested in hitting up other nearby attractions like the local hot springs, Dadongshan and Eryanping trails, and Alishan National Scenic Area.
Getting There
Closest city is Chiayi, which can be reached by bus, train, or high-speed rail. If you have your own car, it's a 3+ hour drive from Taipei. From there, either rent a scooter or drive another 40 minutes. You can find the area with a simple Google search.
The approach now consists of walking past an old iron gate and down an abandoned overgrown road until you see an enormous “boulder”. Keep an eye out to your left for a metal staircase that ascends the concrete retaining wall. This puts you on the short path up to Ultimate Wall.
