Caprock Boulders

Colorado > Grand Junction… > S Camp > Water Tower Hill

Description

This one of the many groupings of boulders interspersed throughout the hills around the water tank that overlooks the South Camp area. There are several climbable boulders all sitting less than a 2 minute walk from a neighborhood road. Boulders are Dakota Sandstone as is typical to the area. A popular biking/hiking trail system cuts through this area.

This is a new area that is completely undeveloped for bouldering as far as I can tell.

Getting There

If you're on I-70, take exit 28 for 24th Rd toward Redlands Pkwy . At the traffic circle, take the 1st exit onto 24 Rd. Continue straight onto Redlands Pkwy. Continue onto S Broadway. Turn left onto S Camp Rd. Turn left onto Questa Dr. Turn left onto Caprock Ct. and drive until you see an unmarked trailhead on the right. The boulders will be obvious. You can just park on the side of the road.

[Hide Comment] I’ve done some research on this area, and it looks like the boulders are on public land or at least land that is owned by the city. The main issue is it is in the middle of a neighborhood. Please keep a low profile, and try not to do anything to upset the local home owners. It might be a good idea to not overcrowd this area as well, so if you get there and there are already a couple cars, maybe go to Riggs or Dynamite Shacks instead. Being respectful and courteous to homeowners, and maybe picking up trash and keeping the area clean will go a long way towards avoiding access issues. This land is not designated as a city park, so access is not protected as such. Thank you. May 30, 2012

[Hide Comment] Rschap, thanks for doing the research. Those are some excellent points to make. I used to mountain bike out in these foothills a lot before I moved to Utah. I have never had any issues with the homeowners in the area, but I can definitely see how bouldering could be a bit more intrusive. Thank you for bringing up a valid concern. Jun 6, 2012
