Description
Oberried is a popular granite area in the Ötztal (Ötztal is purported to be "THE undisputed granite climbing hot spot in Tirol"!) and is especially family friendly.
Oberried has nearly 100 routes and a range of grades appealing to climbers from abject beginners and small children to cutting edge rock specialists. The area has climbing specific parking and bathrooms, flat, large staging areas with fenced off areas with swing sets and playground slides and eco friendly garbage disposal. There are 8 separate sectors to choose from and there have been recently added routes as well. The area really comes across as a well maintained climbing park. The fenced off areas might be as much for keeping out the local cows as keeping playing children in...
Good rock, well bolted, and well thought out anchoring in a casual pastoral setting are hallmarks of this area.
Most of the area is east facing which provides welcome sun on chilly mornings, and shade in the afternoon/evening on warm days. Oberried is located at the edge of bright green pastures in the wide part of the Längenfeld area.
Use of the parking lot requires a fee of 3 Euro. The bathroom at the parking lot is clean to the point of dropped food could probably be picked up and consumed without further thought. A short five to ten minute hike south of the parking lot leads to the climbing.
Also in this area for activity is the Lehner Wasserfall and Reinhard-Schiestl-Klettersteig at Burgsteinwand.
The local tourist offices either in Längenfeld or any of the larger towns in the Ötztal valley should have the local climbing guidebook as well as information on private residences for rent, camping, and hotel and restaurant information. If coming off the A12 autobahn, the Ötztal Tourismus Infopoint is less than 4km on the main B186 road and a good starting point for tourist information.
The local Aqua Dome is an amusing diversion. Nice place for a crazy hot springs soak for both you and your wallet (ha ha!). Discount tickets available at most lodging locations nearby.
