Virginia > Central & South… > Charlottesville… > Blue Ridge Parkway

Description

Largest concentration of greenstone boulders on the parkway right now. Mountain project only contains the ridgeline right now. Check out  for the dropbox.com/s/6s9bdu0qu9pr6… complete guides.

Getting There

Head south on parkway until about MP 18.5 and see well maintained parking lot for White Rock Gap area.

Trail to take is directly across road from parking lot. Take it about 1/4 mile and keep looking left and will start to see the boulders across small stream.

[Hide Comment] Are routes that are on the online guide going to be posted soon? I have been here the last few weekends and not only sent a few lines but cleaned a few boulders and set a few new lines. one being an awesome V6 that has an FA and second accent on it now. It is located on the back of big boy up and awesome aret feature to crimpers. The reason i am posting thins is i want to see a good guide put together but i dont want to step on anyones toes that might be working on it. If no one cares, i will start putting a few more pictures up and logging routes, not claiming any FA other than what i clean set and send as a new line myself. Bold Text Nov 6, 2011

[Hide Comment] Elloit a charlottesville local is putting together a guide to The Forest. I believe that he is doing it in pdf or powerpoint form with some maps to the boulders that require a bit of bushwhacking. I'll send you his e-mail, you should let him know about any lines/boulders I'm sure he and all of us from Charlottesville would be interested. Hope to catch you out there sometime.

[Hide Comment] Andrew, you guys should post here on MP if you all are interested. I have a copy on the Forest PDF and it looks awesome. I talked to Elliot about posting on MP and asked him to be cautious about it since there was some emotion up there last time someone posted problems in the forest. I was just trying to avoid the drama. Thanks for all the hard work you guys are doing up there, Im stoked to check it out sometime! Dec 23, 2011
[Hide Comment] How dry would this area be on Sunday? The last time I was here it was a bit damp and I don't think it had rained in a while. Curious if anyone else would be climbing up there? Mar 9, 2012
[Hide Comment] Any updates on when that PDF is going to be released? I went there yesterday with friends and we realize there were probably several areas missed. That PDF would be great, but I understand there are some concerns for this area. I'm assuming it is the usual no trash, dogs, and "leave no trace"...etc. Anything else we should know about? We plan to go back in the near future, but we certainly do not want to explore more if people will get angry. Mar 12, 2012
[Hide Comment] Anyone know where I might get the PDF, finished or unfinished? I'm heading there this weekend and it would help to get a heads up on the area. Sep 24, 2012
[Hide Comment] Hello! I'm going to be climbing at the Forest for the first time next week, and was wondering if anyone could tell me if the Siesta area and the Greenstone trail area are anywhere near the main Forest bouldering area? I have the guidebook, but more detailed directions would be great! Thanks! :) Oct 17, 2012

[Hide Comment] You'll have to drive between all three of those areas, but you should have zero problem finding the Siesta and Greenstone boulders. Nov 21, 2012

[Hide Comment] Andrew: I checked the link and couldn’t see/find/navigate to anything concerning closures, although I didn’t spend too much time looking. What is closed? I have never climbed here, but if an area has been closed to climbing I would like to post something on here that resonates with climbers a little more loudly than a comment with a link to another site, most folks will skip by it. Could you add some more info? Thanks for sharing! We all need to respect closed areas for sure. Apr 23, 2013
[Hide Comment] Regarding the closure. The "trifecta" area is on private land. In the beginning when we were re-developing the forest we were on good terms with the landowners. After a number of people brought unleashed dogs and large groups onto their land they left a sign on the boulders asking us no to climb there anymore. In addition someone removed the bonsai tree from the highball V2 in the area. This angered a ton of Charlottesville locals and probably pissed off the landowners. As of recently the sign is gone and I've begun climbing there again, however, tread lightly. Dec 5, 2014
[Hide Comment] Was nicely asked to still not climb at trifecta this last weekend, so it's definitely CLOSED!!! Mar 26, 2015

[Hide Comment] I just went to the forest boulders today and bushwhacked past the roadside boulders to what I believe to be the ridge line. I'm trying to figure out what the rating of a particular boulder problem was. It was on a boulder where someone had tied a blue petzl rope around a tree for a down climb, but was one the opposite side of the rope. Apr 17, 2016
[Hide Comment] Kevin you saw Mycotic Break (V9) which is the step climb under the rope. For the climbs on the other side check out: blueridgebouldering.com/Mus… Apr 24, 2016

[Hide Comment] I was lucky enough to download the PDF guide to this area and still had it on my computer from a few years ago. Here's a link:

If anyone is interested in exploring this area some time (and maybe showing me around) let me know! I've only been a couple of times, and only to the forest area. Oct 13, 2019
[Hide Comment] This area has no cell reception unless on the ridgeline, make sure to download your guide before going. Oct 7, 2020
[Hide Comment] Look at this PDF: dropbox.com/s/6s9bdu0qu9pr6…
And scroll down to "The Forest" section. There is a pretty accurate map at the beginning of the section.

[Hide Comment] idk who renamed "Spray You With an AK, V5" but that was a stellar problem name and it should return. Jul 20, 2022
