Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closures Details

Please be aware of the annual raptor seasonal closures!

The two areas Jefferson County Open Space intends to close in Clear Creek Canyon, shown on the attached maps, encompass the active eagle nests. If the Clear Creek eagles continue to nest in the active nests, these areas will remain closed from February 1 through July 31. If the eagles choose different nesting sites, the closures will be adjusted accordingly to protect those eagles during their breeding season.

Currently, rock climbing areas that fall inside of the seasonal raptor closures include:

Ghost Crag
Highlander
Skinny Legs
Stumbling Block
Tetanus Garden
Fault Caves

Description

East Colfax is located on the west side of Tunnel 6. It is by the tyrolean to get across the river by The Armory; however, you do not cross the river.

Eds. there are raspberries growing in the area.

Getting There

Park past Tunnel 6, walk towards the tunnel on the river side. Walk past the tyrol, and East Colfax is on your right. It is about a 100 foot wall.

Eds. This is opposite from The Armory on the north side of the road. You don't cross the river to get to this crag. The approach time is ~5 minutes.

The slope up to the upper right climbs has been improved, but it still is a hazard for those below. Note, some kid groups gather to climb the slabby routes at the base of this gully!
