Description
The Trestles are three old train trestles which used to have a train running over them before a fire destroyed the tracks in the early to mid 1900s. They tore the tracks down and rebuilt them nearby. Years later, somebody enthusiastic about climbing came by and bought the land that the trestles sit on and opened them to climbing. There are three trestles, all of which are bolted. If you're dying to get outside but don't have the money or motivation to go someplace good, this is a good place to go to help build the motivation to save your money and go some place better. This area is also good for getting comfortable leading outside since it's low-angle, easy clips. However, there is sometimes a good distance between clips (about 10 ft.), meaning you may need have a good head about you. The climbs are on sandstone blocks cut relatively square and stacked together with mortar at about an 80 degree angle. The top ~10ft. are red bricks. Due to the nature of their intension (bridge supports), they are of different hights as you go from the road to the river. Watch for ticks in this area. Depending on the season, you may also get to see some very interesting species of arachnid who make this their home.
Getting There
From Lynchburg:
Take Highway 221/Forest Rd. towards Bedford. When you see the Goode Post Office, slam on your brakes and make the LEFT turn onto Goode Station Rd. right before the BP station. Follow this road and as it bends left and take the RIGHT in the middle of the bend onto Goode Rd. This quickly makes a 90 degree right turn followed by a 90 degree left turn and onto a wooden bridge. Take the first RIGHT after the bridge (Perennial Ln). This dirt road winds down past some houses and dead ends at a turn around/parking area. Technically, you could continue driving, but it's a 4WD (high clearance) road after the parking area. Hike down this 4WD road for about .7 miles and when the road bends right, continue straight to the first trestle and some stairs.
