Rabbit Ears Peak
Colorado
> Steamboat Springs
Description
Volcanic conglomerate offering different cracks and easier climbs for the daring souls. I suggest bringing a rope, harness, and helmet for kids or yourself for an aided descent at least. Also, a long, thin rope or webbing for an anchor wrap could be very handy. While many of us experienced climbers solo this summit via the two easy climbs, the rock is unpredictable! Sorry, no via ferrata or kletter Stieg.
Getting There
Head southeast from Steamboat Springs on US Hwy 40 about 20 miles, past the West Rabbit Ears Pass (10 miles) look for the signs. Follow the dirt road past the camp grounds turn left on FDR 311 and go through the gate. Park if you have a small car or truck. Continue, if you have a jeep or good clearance. Further parking options include the T junction of 311 and 291. Hike FDR 291 towards Rabbit Ears via the "Bunny Trail" or continue with a high clearance jeep. You will go through a couple camping spots and a low creek crossing. The easy hike is enjoyable through flowering meadows. The last leg of the hike is steep, but the views over the valley make it well worth the work.
