Please be respectful of the land owner's wishes and do not climb or hike here until further notice. This includes White Lightning, Skinner Roof, Weather Wall, Yellow Wall, Larry's Annihilation, Needle Rock, Mississippi Fred's, and Secret Tom's. Park officials and CRAG are working to regain access to this valuable climbing resource. Be patient and check back for updates.

Description
Established as a reserve in 1988, City of Rocks is located in Southern Idaho close to the Idaho Utah border. It is well known for its granite spires and monoliths which are renowned among climbers and has an abundance of both trad and sport climbs.
The granite spires, City of Rocks is known for, are igneous rock formed by the slow cooling of magma. These underground magma pools were brought to the surface through weathering, erosion, and Mass Wasting. In addition to making tall rock faces, some reaching over 60 stories tall, this process created unique boulders. These boulders cater to all styles of climbing and all ability levels.
The bouldering in The City is known for its sharp crimps, abundance of pinches, and huecos. Because the granite in The City cooled underground it is either very strong or very flaky making some features unable to be cleaned. In addition to this because of the weathering process The City bouldering offers some uniquely beautiful lines such as arches, joints, dikes, and more.
Getting There
Finding Bouldering:
Boulders in the city of rocks are often concentrated around campsites or around popular rope climbing arias. Many of these arias have been assembled and been posted online. But a lot of boulders, both with first ascents and without, have not been uploaded.
For instructions on how to get to City of Rocks please reference the main City of rocks page.
Camping:
There are a few options for camping in the city of rocks:
- BLM land:
One option is camping in nearby BLM land. See diagram in the photos section. Information from CRAG (Climbing Resource Advisory Group) and posted by Mike Engle.
- In Park campsites:
The second, and more popular option, is camping in City of Rocks. These campsites have pit toilets and are often within walking distance of major rope climbing arias and/or have bouldering in the campsite. A drawback to these campsites is there is a lot of competition during the prime climbing season, spring and fall, and they fill up months in advance. City of rocks used to use Reserve America to book campsites but recently that sight has been taken down. The best alternative I have found is the following link:
