Description
Granite boulders scattered amongst giant sequoia, fir, pine, oak and cedar forest, in the central Sierra Nevada California. Some boulders lie right next to some of the largest trees on earth, the giant sequoias. Some boulders are in the lower elevation foothill range and are good for winter. The beautiful canyon that is Kings Canyon has a great quantity of large/tall boulders. The boulders in Sequoia tend to be lichen filled slabs but occasionally you'll come across some heavily featured, bomber quartz monzonite. Some of it is slightly overhanging, but mostly slabs and vertical problems in the V0-V6 range. Not much hard bouldering has been done here,... yet. The smaller lines in Sequoia that tend to be dirty are just not as classic as the big clean lines of Yosemite or Bishop. Most of the boulders are in clusters or grouped together, like the General Sherman area, Eli's Paradise, & the Roads End boulders. This makes it good for some circuit bouldering. There is a lot of potential for FA's here so if you like hiking, exploring & cleaning...with no climbers around, just some occasional hikers, this place could be worthwhile for a visit. This is not a real bouldering destination area though. Best to visit for many days and combine some cragging, hiking, camping etc. The season at around 7000' is May to November, with some winter/spring potential in the foothills zone (1000'-4500'). Road construction with delays is always possible when driving into the park. May need to carry tire chains in the winter/spring season. A brush comes in handy, always protect your food from bears, don't feed the wildlife and keep your impact low. For access to Sequoia, the closest town is Three Rivers, CA. Three Rivers Brewing Co and Sierra Subs are both excellent. If driving up highway 180 to Kings Canyon, the last town is Squaw Valley. It's a good idea to fill up your gas tank in town and there are a few markets in the parks if you need supplies. Check with the park about up to date info. NPS Sequoia / Kings Canyon
