Warning Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closures DetailsDrop down

Description

The Hook Creek Boulder is a gigantic block on the South side of Icicle Creek. Home to a few topropes (they look pretty fun for beginners) and a couple of funky problems; it's probably worth the walk over just for Atomic Energy if you're making the rounds at that grade.

Getting There

Park at the large pullout at 6 miles, and walk down to the creek to the bridge. Walk over the bridge and then take a left down the road; the boulder is around 40ft tall and you should be able to see it near the camping/picnic area on your right.

Me, about to make the toss. The hold was full of water that day, and all attempts proved futile.

[Hide Comment] The Leavenworth Bouldering guidebook says there are access issues for this boulder. Is that still the case? Mar 22, 2020

[Hide Comment] I climbed here a lot in 1977 and it deserves better coverage of the routes on MP. Locals, like Fred Beckey and Bob Plum, called the giant block with the top ropes Rat Creek Boulder. A 2018 Icicle Creek access article on washingtonclimbers.org had this to say: "Access to Dog Dome / Slug Rock / Hook Creek Crag / Rat Creek Dome / Rat Creek Boulder: Easiest access is across a private bridge, which is currently posted no trespassing. Access instead by wading the river several hundred yards below the bridge (wait for low water) and staying downstream of the private properties. Avoid the property upstream of bridge. Keep a low profile." Dec 7, 2020
