Description
Close your eyes and think of a stereotypical Germany, you may be thinking of Bavaria, land of enormous beers, lederhosen, and an enrichment of alpen-goodness. The Deutscher Alpen Verein (DAV) does a nice job of maintaining access and bolts: alpenverein.de/ as well as hold a wonderful database and quarterly newsletter: dav-felsinfo.de Towns with bustling Alpine activity include Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, and Berchtesgaden (Oberbayern). There are many well maintained Klettersteig (via ferrata) in the Northern limestone alps as well as the Frankenjura area.
Bavaria Is the largest of the 16 Bundesländer, and is full of people proud of it. You may see signs with "Freistadt Bayern" on them, indicating a support for a free state of Bavaria. People here are generally conservative, catholic, and are engrossed in tradition. Thus you may see climbing traditions that differ from yours.
