Picnic Area

Virginia > Southwest Virgi… > Grayson Highlands SP

Description

The Picnic Bouldering area is as close to perfect as it gets in Virginia. It begins with a parking area that is a 40 second stroll to The Olympus boulder. Olympus is a massive overhanging boulder with sides trending to shorter, more intermediate level lines. Olympus is 18 feet at its tallest, spans 70-80 feet in length and has good landings all the way around. secluded in its own sanctuary of old growth rhododendron, you feel alone even though nearby there are trails and amenities.

with an even shorter "approach" is the Rock House boulder. This boulder offers quality, slightly to heavily overhung lines and a fun dihedral problem. Also on the Rock House Boulder is one of the most popular v-3s in GHSP called "Indian Outlaw".

Past Olympus is an indoor restroom. Beside the restroom is a drink machine. Near by is a playground. Near there is also an outdoor concert stage where bluegrass and Celtic music festivals are held. All around are open fields for football, soccer, and generally whatever one does in fields of grass (rolling in the grass, mowing grass, you name it). There are two historic cabins down the hill and a small stone 1800's era graveyard. This is all within comfortable walking distance, so its a great place for a group of climbers and non climbers alike.

You can also have fun climbing on the smaller Street Side Fins and Picnic Block that are all within a stones throw of Olympus. From the Picnic Area you can venture down to the Outlaw Area and the Hinterlands for another world of other incredible bouldering opportunities.
