Description
Interstate Park is the collection of sunny, east-facing crags above Gun Show. The rock is the most granitic of all the Exit 38 crags, offering great friction and edges, but can be crumbly. The main crag of Headlight Point / Eastern Block is sunny and well-exposed, generally drying quickly, but can be exposed to major wind coming down the valley. The smaller crags are more shaded and wind-protected.
This is a great place to knock out many moderate routes in a beautiful setting. Some of the Exits' best 5.7-5.10- routes are found here. The harder routes that have been put up are definitely worth the try hard if you can climb the grade, on great rock with unique and interesting granitic features.
The area has seen several waves of development - Bryan Burdo and Leland Windham put up most of the routes on the main cliff in the early 2000s. Rad Roberts, Garth Bruce and Jens Klubberud filled in several of the missing harder lines and smaller crags in the next decade, and a few more routes have gone down in recent years.
Getting There
As of Fall 2018 there have been substantial changes to the trail, and the old description is no longer valid.
Stay on the main hiking trial trail leading to Gritscone, Gunshow etc, and continue past to the left of Gritscone for another 5 minutes or so. There will be a fork in the trail with fence posts marking two directions. Take the right fork. Continue down this trail for another 10 minutes past a small talus field and a short uphill section (passing the turnoffs to Gun Show, the Cirque and Truck Town) until you reach an obvious small bolted cliff section, this being Headlight Point.
