Description

A scenic tourist area with great potential for future development (most lines end 60' up a 500'+ wall). Due to the tourist traffic expect lots of gawking Chinese tourists and couples taking wedding pictures decked out in full tux and gown. The best part is that amenities are quite good and you can easily get lunch at nearby restaurants if you want hot food or cold water/juice/beer.

All climbs are located on the opposite side of the very shallow river (you can take a boat across, but it is less than 2 feet deep so why bother). The main area is first or second restaurant/tourist stand after the first large bend in the road. There is a parking lot and a very narrow long bridge across the river.

The rock is of good quality, but climbs are sometimes covered in sand. Some climbs are over-bolted, but you're a big boy/girl so you can clip bolts where you feel necessary and skip the others.

ShiDu is an excellent example of just how much potential there is for climbing in the BJ area. the cliff is high and goes on for what seems a mile or more. Only 1% or less has been developed for climbing at this time. It's good location and with such easy access if Climbing gets big in Beijing I can easily see this area becoming very important. Go and set up your FA for history!

Getting There

ShiDu is 2+ hours from Beijing so you need to charter a mini bus. There is a public bus to a nearby town and once there you can taxi to the cliffs, but I do not remember the town's name; sorry.

This is a 5.8 called "The Child's Route" in Chinese. It is in the center of the wall with a gentle hangover and lots, and lots, and lots of holds everywhere.

This is the main wall in the area with about thirty routes on it, ranging from 5.8 to 5.11s.
