High Valley is a series basalt outcropping ranging from 20' to 60' high. There are several areas all located near the bridge. The main or upper wall hosts the most routes. The other areas have only a few routes. The routes range from easy cracks to steep faces.
Fun Whos Who Notes: This area is where one rather well known Oregon alpinist cut his teeth in the mid 80s. In the late 70s/early 80s another climber came out of here who was one of the founding board members of the Access Fund. Both were members of the LaGrande High School climbing club "Cliffhangers" which was spearhead by Joe Sandoz and Steve Ryman. The club spent many hours climbing at High Valley.
Getting There
From the town of Union head east on Hwy 203 (Lower Cove Road). About a mile out of town at a bit of a Y turn left on to High Valley Road. After another couple of miles or so the road turns to dirt and enters a rim rock canyon. Just before going across a white bridge park on right side of the road under a crag which has some routes on it. The main or upper wall is 300' up on the hill side to the north.
