For 10 years most people parked in a dirt pullout by the RR tracks and hiked alongside the tracks to access the river but it is all BNSF property and hiking alongside the tracks is illegal. They have had multiple vehicles towed as of 3/12/2020.
Description
At the start of the hike the water level is usually somewhat high but don't let that dissuade you. The main walls and especially the Purgatory area are slightly higher elevation and usually not in the water. PLEASE do not climb on wet rock here. This area does not get much sun and therefore is slow to dry. The rock is also a softer sandstone and is more vulnerable to breaking.
Getting There
Please be courteous and responsible when parking at the VFW. They are graciously allowing people to park and hike through their property. Consider stopping in and giving them business or just thanking them and dropping a tip!
Mannford, OK nestled west of Tulsa about 20 minutes or so. From highway 51 and highway 48 head north about a mile or so. Park at the VFW half a mile south from the railroad tracks and hike on through their backyard straight west and downhill to the dry creekbed. Turn right and hike down straight into the Purgatory area.
Approach Time:
- Parking lot to Purgatory (New Map) - 5 Minutes
- Start of Purgatory (New Map) to End of Purgatory (Orangutan Swang) - 3 Minutes
- Purgatory to Zen Pen - 7-10 Minutes
