Moss Rock Preserve

Alabama

Description

From the Southeastern Climber's Coalition website:

The Shades Crest Boulder Fields, on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama, has long been a threatened area. Late in 2001 the land that the boulders were on were up for zoning changes by the city council of Hoover, Alabama for development purposes. Early in 2002 Lee Means, accompanied by other local climbers and a local conservation group got together and ultimately saved the small outcrop of sandstone boulders. Thanks to the efforts of all those involved, the City of Hoover designated the area the Moss Rock Trail Preserve, thus saving the land from the encroaching housing developments.

Get past the mild graffiti and trash from the local high school students and this spot offers some of the best bouldering in the state...see also, HP40...and is amongst the prime spots in all of the SE in some folks opinion.

[Hide Comment] Visited by myself, with no crash pad, and had good, easy fun traversing around the jugfests at the bottoms of the boulders for a couple hours. Others with spotters and crash pads looked like they were getting challenging workouts. One high school kid seemed nervous after topping out on a cave route; the downclimbing looked a bit intimidating in some places. Easy hike in that's accessible for families, some of whom were very curious about climbing and asked a lot of questions :) Dec 29, 2011

[Hide Comment] Just wanted to post that i found a La Sportiva Solution left shoe. Just one. It was sitting off the trail in the woods. Just thought i would ask if anyone is looking for it. Pretty expensive shoe to lose just one. Oct 26, 2013
