The Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent's Compendium states that: 1. Vegetation is not allowed to be used as an anchor. 2. Only neutral or rock colored bolt hangers are allowed.
This is the unmistakable, balanced pillar seen to the west at about 3.5 miles down the Geology Tour Road. The classic "Indian Giver" is on the west side.
Getting There
Park at Pullout #5 and walk west. the approach will become obvious.
[Hide Comment] When we climbed the Lost Pencil in 1987, there were three routes on it. Only one free, The Indian Giver. The other two routes were A1 bolt ladders. The one on NW side was already partially chopped. The one on SE side had 18 bolts with hangers removed. We used small wired stoppers over the hangers, to aid up this.
