Access Issue: Rule changes for pets and trail closures 30 minutes after sunset
Details
Rule Changes Concerning Pets at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area to Take Effect March 1.
Beginning March 1, new rules will take effect at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area designed to balance the need to better protect sensitive natural habitats atop the rock, including the vernal pools, and still allow visitors to continue to enjoy central Texas’ most popular destination with their pets.
Starting Tuesday, pets will only be allowed in specified camping areas, day-use areas and the Loop Trail. Pets will no longer be allowed to accompany hikers on the Summit Trail that ascends to the top of Enchanted Rock.
Most trails, including the Summit Trail, are closed 30 minutes after sunset, allowing park visitors to view the sunset and safely descend to the parking lot. The Loop Trail is the only trail open after sunset to gain access to the primitive camping areas.

Description
Freshman Mountain is the smallest of the three domes and sits midway between the Main Dome and Buzzards Roost. Like the Little Dome areas, Freshman Mountain does not see a lot of traffic (climbers or hikers). There are four climbing areas on the dome itself, all found on its southern and eastern sides. The Rock Clark Wall and South American Boulders are both located on the domes southern flanks. The Yellow Pages and Mirage Wall are on the eastern side. Also like the Little Dome areas, these climbs are all short, single pitch routes with the only bolted lines located in the South American Boulders. The South American Crack (5.8+) is the areas premiere climb.
Getting There
The easiest way to the Freshman Mountain climbing areas is via the Loop Trail or Sandy Creek. Follow the trail or creek east until you reach the large group pavilion. From here, turn left and follow the Turkey Pass trail past the Frog Pond and Turkey Peak into the pass. The flanks of Freshman Mountain will be on your right. Scramble up the slabs and traverse around the south side to reach Rock Clark and the South American Boulders. Continue around the dome to reach the Yellow Pages and Mirage Wall.
