Global Village

Kentucky > Red River Gorge > Natural Bridge Region
Warning Access Issue: New route development is prohibited in the Daniel Boone National Forest. DetailsDrop down

Description

Global had a revival of sorts a few years ago. Previously it was home to a bunch of hardman obscure classics and a couple 5.7 crack. But then someone bolted a couple more moderate routes, cleaned out another 5.7 crack, and suddenly Global Village went from mostly unknown to high traffic gumby cliff.

There are some fantastic routes here and it has definitely earned it's attention. The wall needs some maintenance to trails for sure.

Getting There

From Slade, drive south on KY11, passing by Miguel's, for 4.8 miles to a grassy meadow area and pulloff parking area on the right (37.7508, -83.66375). From the parking, cross KY11 to find a trail leading uphill.  At the large boulder and trail split, hike right.  Repeat again for the second Boulder (left takes you to the far side of Emerald City).  Follow this for a bit, through a drainage and up a hill to a third split. Left goes directly up rebar steps to the Eureka/Father and Son/Vision area and the right goes to the harder sport routes and the right end of the cliff where Casual Viewing is located.

If you're going to the rightmost section of Global Village, follow the trail on the right side of this photo. It is much easier than the eroded mudslide to the left. The right trail comes up to the cliff at "Casual Viewing" (5.7 trad line).

[Hide Comment] Approach trail has been improved with switchbacks. Dec 5, 2013
[Hide Comment] Approach: You have to go through 2 ravines. The father and son area is about 500 yards after the second ravine. If you find yourself going up iron reebar steel steps for about 8 feet with a rope ladder, then you will approach the Father and Son climb. About 100 feet to your right when you get to the top of the ladder. This is the beginning/left end of the global village. The right/east end is about 1/4 mile further to your right. There is path down low and up high.

Rappel: 70 meter will get you down from the absolute top on Kentucky and Jake Flake. Not sure about 60 meter, maybe with stretch. Jun 16, 2014

I have a vague recollection the original submitter (forgot his name) deleted it a couple months ago. If you have climbed it and want to add it, that would be great. Thanks. May 10, 2017

[Hide Comment] The approach to this area has become infested with a nest of ground hornets. There is chalk on a rock marked "bee" pointing to the nest. Avoid the red hand rope, instead going along the rock face. As well, one of the rebar ladder rungs busted. Oct 4, 2017

[Hide Comment] Approach beta on this page worked as advertised. Some technical scrambling required (annoying with a big stick clip), but do-able. No hornets, just mud. ~20 min, faster if you have less gear. See strava.com/activities/24013… for Eureka routes, etc. Jun 30, 2019

[Hide Comment] Approach directions are not correct, or are misleading. There are TWO boulders with splits, and going left at either split gets you to different parts of Emerald City. Left at the second split spits you out right at Whiteout. It is possible to bushwhack back down to the trail, but it’s a PITA. Make sure to go RIGHT at BOTH boulders before heading left to the Eureka area if that’s your destination. Sep 2, 2019
