Description Suggest change

The Northern Point consists of short (by Smith standards) basalt walls with a variety of cracks and bolted routes. There's a pretty good selection of short easy trad leads and topropes can be set up from above with little trouble.

One of the best things about this area is that it is in the shade for much of the afternoon, especially on the left side. This is a welcome change from the baking temperatures of the main areas or the basalt across the river.

This area is split into the (climber's) Right side and (climber's) Left side with the approach scramble dividing the two.

Getting There Suggest change

From the parking lot turnaround follow the well-used trail north to the rim. There's a break in the cliff with an easy 3rd class scramble down to the base of the cliffs. The scramble starts by a viewing area with a bench. There is some exposure at the top with some potential severe drops if you miss place your feet.

Alternatively, you can follow the north point trail going north until you see a foot path break off to the left away from the main trail. Follow that down around until you reach a wooden bench. Then you can break off from that path and have a very mild scramble up to the far right side of the northern point climbing area. There is another smaller hiking path you’ll come across that goes around to the left side of northern point.
