Big Wild Boulder

Colorado > Independence Pass > Wild Rock Area

Description

Located in the trees below Wild Rock, and adjacent to the James Brown Bouldering area, the Big Wild Boulder hosts two excellent short routes. The climbs are more akin to roped bouldering, but nevertheless are definitely worth a look, as they feature bottom-to-top climbing and powerful moves. The boulder receives tree shade throughout the day, and both routes' anchors are accessible from above (by scrambling up the boulder's northwest corner) for toproping.

Getting There

Park on the right side of the road approximately a 1/4 mile before the upper boulderfield (1/2 mile past mile marker 52). Cross the highway, pick up a small path through the woods, and head north for a minute or two through the trees to the obvious boulderfield. The Big Wild Boulder is the largest block and farthest north amongst the cluster.
