Blacktail Butte
Wyoming
> Grand Teton NP
Description
Visiting the Tetons but want something with no commitment? Try a day of sport climbing at Blacktail Butte. The limestone climbing is technical, polished, and generally hard... but the view is world class! The routes are mostly 5.11s and 5.12s, with a handful of 5.10s. There are about 20 routes to keep you busy between the three walls - lower, middle, and upper.
Getting There
Park in a developed turnout just a little North of the Moose junction (a few miles north of the airport). Follow the stairs up to Lower Blacktail Butte, or the trail heading south to Upper Blacktail.

[Hide Photo] Does not look like much from the parking lot but is really good for day trips
This crag does not look like much when you drive by but for people visiting the park that do not do trad or do not want to commit to climbing the tetons it makes a great day or half day activity. The climbing is ok with a lot of small slick holds but the views can not be beat. Try to get here in the morning as the sun bakes it by mid day. I live on the east cost but went here for a day when on vacation and had a great time.

[Hide Comment] Tourists. Sure, maybe Gill with the ropeless ramp. But all the routes, and the traverse, up and back. Lynn flashing, FA Waterstreak Direct. After National Comp at the TRG, Dusl run draws up all the routes, Karn, Franklin follow. Et al etc

[Hide Comment] I have noticed a trend of climbers being confused or looking for UPPER Blacktail Butte in the wrong place while I've been climbing at LOWER Blacktail Butte. If you are looking for UPPER Blacktail Butte, the trail starts on the south end of the parking lot. Follow the well worn trail through lowland meadows for 10-15 minutes before gaining any elevation. The trail to the east of the parking lot leads to steps which take you to the boulder traverse and a trail that branches right to LOWER Blacktail Butte. You do not reach UPPER by going above LOWER (as confusing as that is). The wall you can see from the parking lot is LOWER Blacktail Butte. UPPER Blacktail is not visible from the parking lot. Also, please DO not access LOWER Blacktail from the boulder traverse. That trail is closed to control erosion.
[Hide Comment] I spent a half day here was was pleasant surprised by the quality of climbing here. The rock has great texture and is well featured.
