Description
Some of the best hard crack climbing close to Bishop. The rock is similar to the Buttermilks, but just bigger formations with some killer splitters. Bring your tape for these crags. The elevation is such that it can be climbed year round. Usually don't see the crowds at this area.
Getting There
Driving from Bishop, go west on rt 168 (W Line St) toward Lake Sabrina. About 1.5 mile after the giant S-curve at GPS latitude longitude approx (N37.3001 W118.5376), turn Left (SE) onto Bishop Creek Rd. Immediately curve sharp Left and go NE on asphalt road about 0.35 mile to asphalt parking lot (N37.3024 W118.5306) just E from small power plant.Hike past gate on NE on dirt road alongside water pipe about 500 ft. Just past a small wood structure (pump shack?) over the pipe, turn off road down sharp Right on climber's herd path, then down to Bishop Creek around (N37.3033 W118.52915). Search around (upstream?) for your best crossing route for current water flow conditions. Crossing is mainly on slippery rocks. Hiking poles useful for balance and for placing feet carefully on least-slippery rock surfaces. Be prepare to get you shoes wet. Consider that with spring-time snow-melt, the creek might not be crossable without danger and difficulty -- and that flow might be higher later in the day on your return. After crossing creek, short steep uphill to a flat, then a longer (200 ft) steep SE directly up the slope. Next the climbers' herd path curves Left and makes rising traverse NE for about 800 ft. At last curve Right across the crest of the sub-ridge to reach view (N37.3040 W118.5244) toward the south of the several Little Egypt crags.Effort: about 360 vertical feet uphill over 0.55 mile distance (110 meters uphill over 0.9 km).Time: typical range 18-35 minutes.
