Summit Block Rock

Arizona > Northern Arizona > Sedona Area > W Sedona > Coffeepot Rock Area

Description

Summit Block Rock is located tucked away inside the northwesternmost shadow of Coffeepot Rock and barely visible until you're fairly close. If you squint a lot and use your imagination, it sort of looks like a big sandstone candlestick with a rock flame on top.

Getting There

From the 89a drive North on Coffee Pot Dr.
At the 1st stop sign turn left and drive West on Sanborn Dr.
Turn Right on Little Elf Dr and drive North until road turns right.
Park in the Sugar Loaf Trail head parking lot.
Be respectful of the neighborhood and drive slowly!

[Hide Comment] APPROACH AND DESCENT BETA

APPROACH— like Jeff said, park in the Sugar Loaf trailhead lot and follow the teacup trail.

You can look at the mountain project map and follow the approach trail, but I will write it out as well.

Following the teacup trail from the parking lot, Continue until you hit a T in the trail marked with signage (left takes you towards thunder Mtn trail, right goes towards teacup.) Turn right towards teacup and continue ~.3 miles to ANOTHER signage and keep heading straight towards teacup. After about another .3 miles there will be a sign that says “trail” on the right with another trail that forks left. Take the left trail(see picture) this will take you up to the climbing area. It goes up around the left side of the formation kind of in the back. Use same trail to hike out.

DESCENT— When at the summit there are(as of 11/22) rap anchors on the southeast side of the tower, and some other belay anchors on the southwest side. May have to look over the side of the rock a little to see the rap anchors, they are 2 pitons with a newer bolt for a backup chained together.

If you use a single 70m to descend in two rappels, at the second belay station you MUST throw the rope towards the north side (rappellers right). The ground will look closer as well. If you throw the rope rappellers left you will be about 40 feet short of the ground and may be forced to sling a boulder and lose gear. Don’t make the same mistake we did!

Great views and great climbing! Nov 16, 2022
