Description Suggest change

Zephyr is the southernmost stretch of boulders for the Nine Mile Hill area. The boulders can be found sporadically along a bench situated several hundred feet above CO Highway 141 that runs below its eastern boundary and the southwest facing slope that runs from the canyon wall to Highway 141 below. The rock quality ranges from complete choss to the brilliant black and gold Dakota sandstone that is found at its neighbor, Mecca.

The area lies at an elevation of 6,200 feet and receives abundant sunshine from mid-morning to sunset. A barbed wire cattle fence divides the area in two and may require scaling (do so without destroying it) when accessing some of the boulders.

Overall, the area has some wonderful problems, it's a quiet setting, and it has a good view of the canyon as it meanders south toward its granite areas.

Getting There Suggest change

There are two points to access the Zephyr Boulders.

The first parking can be found 8.5 miles from the intersection of CO Highway 141 and US 50 on road left. It is not so much a parking area, but just pull to the side of the gravel road (just as you come off CO Highway 141) that climbs atop the east plateau above Unaweep. From there, head straight east up the hill, reach the bench above, and you're there. Continue south along the bench for about 5 minutes to access the remaining boulders.

The second parking can be found 8.7 miles from the intersection of CO Highway 141 and US 50 on road left. The parking area can accommodate several vehicles. Head straight east up the hill along the fenceline until reaching the bench. Then either head north or south to reach the area's boulders.
