Description

The South Bluff contains more climbs than you can count on your fingers and toes. Plus, your almost sure to find the climbs available any time of year, any day of the week. It has been rumored that there are even some ice climbs near the base of the bluff if conditions are right. Head on over and check out the climbs on the South Bluff. You can pretend you're on an expedition!

Getting There

The exposed rock of the South Bluff is located across the valley from the CCC area. The climbs are easily spotted in the horizontal band of talus near the top of the bluff. Bushwack your way to the outcropping and get climbing!

I checked out the South Bluff area for the first time this weekend (3/20/04). The climbing is limited but it's worth the trip just to say you've been there; it's "remote" for Devil's Lake and if offers a nice view of the park. Although nothing spectacular, there are indeed ice formations located in the wooded area below the boulder field. I estimate access in the summer would be near impossible if not extremely unpleasant because getting there involves a good amount of bush-whacking. The rock was also wet, dirty, and slippery.

The best bouldering at Devil's Lake is on the South bluff. Good trail starts behind the boat landing parking lot.
