I like bouldering but I climb routes more often, so I am curious about the use of wire brushes I see on the Trapps carriage road boulders. Is there a consensus about whether or not this is okay? Maybe it doesn't hurt the rock, I don't know. But it seems like an overkill on boulders that are well established and cleaned of lichen already.

maybe to clean chalk? can't imagine any routs in the gunks actually needing cleaning otherwise. you guys are spoiled rotten with the ammount of clean rock you have ;)

Using wire brushes to clean holds on existing climbs is generally considered bad form. It polishes the rock.

Not likely to damage (polish) the quartz-based Gunks stone. Crazy hard that stuff is.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
