Who the Concerned Climbers of Arizona (CCoA) are:

Original Post
Linda White · · maricopa, AZ · Joined Feb 2006 · Points: 100

The Concerned Climbers of Arizona has been formed for the purpose of preserving climbing access and the climbing environment. We advocate for continued recreational access to climbing areas that are threatened by development or other forms of encroachment.

• Seeking to Maintain the Integrity of Oak Flat and our Federally Protected Recreational Resources.

The special interest legislation for a foreign mining entity will result in the destruction of a federally protected recreational resource. This national precedent setting legislation presents potential risk for any other so protected recreational areas.

• Preserving Maximum Climbing

The CCoA advocates on behalf of the approximately 2,000 climbs that are at risk at Oak Flat. This potential massive loss in climbing is also unprecedented in scale for our nation.

• Welcoming and Encouraging of Your Participation. We are Open to All.
Please feel free to join us at our next meeting.

Do you find that the efforts of the Access Fund and the Queen Creek Coalition are insufficient?

Larry,

It's my understanding that as the national climber's advocacy group, the AF works with pretty much any and all local grass roots climbing organizations that advocate for climbing access, etc., and usually works alongside and through them on various issues. The CCA is simply another grass roots group and will therefore be working with the AF also.

Larry & everyone else,

It's a long, drawn out story of course.

The group, Concerned Climbers of AZ, are involved in a 'big picture' perspective and are really excited about working with others regarding access, education, cleanups, climbing, preserving crags, climbing, community and did I mention climbing.

Come to the next meeting:
Tues Oct 12th, 2010 6PM @
Boulders
530 W Broadway
Tempe, AZ 85281
ALL ARE WELCOME!

@ Larry, I do beleive the QCC's efforts are insufficient. They have a mission to accomplish and I hope their efforts sufficiently represent your views if you choose to support them. They do not seem sufficient to me, that's why I am a member of the new organization. One that would hope to have your help in the future.

The Concerned Climbers AZ hopes to get out and get people more involved in the community. One big thing is trying to keep Oak Flat out of foreign hands and used responsibly if it is sold out. It's a big issue and complex as well.

Another issue is getting more folks involved in taking care of our climbing areas. Differences in the QCC and CCA are not limited to one particular issue alone. As Fred stated, the AF will work with all organizations hoping to make a difference.

I've heard similar comments from other involved that QCC has been co-opted by an individual or individuals more interested in owning the process than in the ultimate goal of preserving the area. Unfortunately I don't know enough to be able to provide names or specific details.

Looks like Resolution Copper will have a new President soon. The current one is retiring. Looks like they have an assignment period of about 1-2 years since this is the 4th one in about 6 +/- years or so.

The link below is for the Superior Sun:

Another recent article in the Sun discusses the proposed mine process as being similar that as San Manuel north of Tucson (google it) and provides a graphic video of how a 1 1/2 mile area may "drop from tens of feet to a few hundred feet" accordingly.

In their continuing efforts to characterize the ore body beneath the Oak Flat area, Resolution Copper has placed a new drill rig near the entrance to the Euro Dog Access Area. This rig was permitted in the expanded phase of exploration that was approved earlier this year.

Originally the rig was going to sit at the Euro Dog Access Area (see photo below) but local climbing advocates in the CCA were instrumental in convincing the FS that it would negatively impact the recreational access to Euro Dog Valley and the Shark Wall/Davy Jones/Atlantis bouldering areas. Thankfully, through the public NEPA process, climbers were heard.

Perhaps this letter may help explain some of the differences and what the CCA represents

A reminder that the Concerned Climbers of Arizona, the local's Oak Flat and environs advocacy group, are meeting next Tuesday, January 11th, 6 pm at Boulders, NE corner of Broadway and Roosevelt in Tempe. Anyone and everyone is invited and welcome . . . but you gotta buy your own beverages and food . . . sorry!

Also, here's a recent article about the behind the scenes dealings between the mining company and some of the stakeholder communities. Our very own climbing community's difficulties are mentioned.

Forgot this recent article in the Washington Post about the Oak Flat issue, certainly in the running for the energizer bunny of access and advocacy issues here in Arizona . . .

An exceptionally noteworthy excerpt:

"The mine itself, when it's operational, presents an attractive tourist destination," [Jon] Cherry [RCM VP] said."

Interesting.
