I'll be passing through southern VA on Monday, and was hoping to boulder a few hours at Grayson highlands. I'll have two pads with me, and hoping to get on a good selection of high quality problems up to v7 or so. Any recommendations for a spot I could go with lots of stuff? I've been once before and recall driving quite a bit between boulders. I would prefer to have one highly concentrated area if that's available? Thanks.
Been a while since I have been there but I know the first parking area at the entrance has a few problems and there is alot if you kinda go in and take the first right and park around there with alot of big boulders in walking distance.
I know there is alot more but I have only been there a few days.
Go up to the Listening Rock Trail/boulders...there are tons of routes within a quick walk of the parking lot, in a wide variety of grades. Olympus Boulder really focuses on hard problems (V5-Vdouble digit) and the Contact Station boulders have a limited number of routes. I personally like the Highlands area because of the scenery and ponies, but again there aren't too many problems concentrated in that area compared to LRT.
The first third of the Listening Rock Trail is your best bet for a variety of lines in one spot. If you hike out the trail past the shanghai boulder though you'll be walking a good distance for other boulder clusters.
You can go to the contact station boulders on your way out/in also.
If all you do is hard stuff and want to push it, yeah Olympus Boulder in the picnic area is your place.
