Where else in the world can I find a place to climb like Tonsai beach? (quality climbing as well as quality social atmosphere)

Hi All,

I'm trying to pick my next spot to climb in the world(kind of leaning towards Europe as I already bought my ticket to Kalymnos for late march, but dont mind going across the world for the dream spot).

Basically I loved Tonsai because of the amazing climbing and great social atmosphere. People were always socializing at the bar and every morning you would wake up, go to the same restaurant where everyone was meeting to pick out a spot to climb and separate into groups.

The only other place I have found like it was the Hang dog campground in New Zealand(essentially just a campground of climbers with an amazing social atmosphere, you basically got to know everyone in the campground within 2 days).

I guess I have two questions:
1. I know the climbing in Kalymnos is amazing, but how is the social life compared to Tonsai? On the Kalymnos MP page, i found this line that scared me a bit, "The atmosphere is quite different here than other locales, the climbers tend to be a little older and tend to travel as couples as opposed to a place like Thailand. "
2. Where else should I go given what I am looking for? I am strongly considering going back to Tonsai but if I can find another place like it, I'd love to go there instead.

I'm not looking to party every night, but having something to do besides climbing and people to interact with is important as I am traveling solo.

Regarding Tonsai and Kalymnos: I spent most of my early 20s in Thailand. Now I am 30, married, and my next big sport climbing trip will proably be Kalymnos with my wife.

The climbing in Kalymnos is more spread out and you need a motorbike to access most of it. Also, there are loads of places to stay and they are not all within walking distance to the same morning meeting spot. Other than that, I've found it to be a plenty sociable place with very nice climbers and locals.

There aren't many places on earth like Tonsai (thank God). If you like drinking beer and eating breakfast with the same people and talking about climbing all the time you could try The Olive Branch in El Chorro. Way more laid back than Tonsai (people don't take themselves too seriously) and IMO that's a god thing.

The orange house in spain if you want sport and English speakers.

The Peak District in England if you want trad (make contact with a climbing club before you turn up or look for some partners via ukclimbing.com)

It is normally easy to find a bunch of people to climb with here: summitpost.org/ailefroide-r…
during july and august

This is a backpackers lodge in Turkey full of climbers that owns a rock face:

July and August will be to hot

Hope that helps.

I think the Smith Rock campground has a similar feel to Tonsai. Everyone cooks food in the same area so you meet lots of people, Bend isn't too far and Redmond is closer, so you have good food and beer options. The rock is a 5-20 minute hike depending on where you want to climb. All the climbers I met were friendly.

It's maybe not as exotic, but fantastic none the less. And cheap...I think even cheaper per day than Thailand.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
