What's the scene like for Creeksgiving?

Hey guys, I'm considering a Creeksgiving trip this year and I'd like to get the scoop on what it's like. I'm expecting crowds, but good folk, right? How's the camping? Would I be fucked if I show up on Thursday to find a site? Anything else you wanna share?

Thanks!

Hi George,

I plan on going to Creeksgiving this year with some friends myself. Have you ever been to Indian Creek before? There is limited camping inside with formal sites that are first come first serve , along with areas that require high clearance vehicles that are more primitive. I've only climbed there once and this would be my first Creeksgiving myself.

I haven't been, but I will probably make a weekend of it before Thanksgiving. I've only just moved to Western Colorado a few weeks ago from the PNW so the desert is all new. I've got the Sharp End Guidebook which has a good map so I've got a pretty good idea of what the layout is. It's good to know that some roads are high clearance only, but I think we'll be alright in our little SUV. I'm stoked on the idea, but I wanna make sure I get there in good time to find a site and have some sense of what to expect. Perhaps a local can chime in?!?

Be prepared for big crowds and you will have a good time. Plenty of camping options outside the normal campgrounds especially if you have high clearance. Also plenty of obscure crags if you want to escape the crowds. But plan on the popular camping and climbing areas to be crowded.

Ahh... Creeksgiving! A tradition as Amurican as apple pie. Yes, Creeskgiving is crowded but it also super fun. There seems to be a general congenial atmosphere and people are usually very friendly and welcoming. There are usually plenty of crags to visit, especially if you go to the more obscure walls, and the mood is very festive at night, especially if you camp at Creek Pasture or SuperBowl. Last year, around midnight on Turkey Day itself, a roving horde of naked hippies went fire to fire in Creek Pasture, spreading good cheer and shaking their booteys. If you're in to that sort of thing, then Creeksgiving is most definitely for you. Oh, and the climbing is pretty rad as well.

What days do people usually start showing up for Creeksgiving? I'm thinking of heading out there the weekend before thanksgiving week hoping to avoid the crowds. Is it pretty busy this time too or not so much?

from now until thanksgiving it is crowded. That doesn't mean that it's not fun, just harder to get a camp spot and get on that super classic climb at the super popular crag.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
